The film focusses on four families working for one landowner on an estate in the province of Bergamo. An immersion into late 19th century Italian peasant life, filming on an abandoned farm, enlisting local people to play the parts - through the cycle of seasons, of hard labour, love and marriage, birth and death, faith and superstition - evoking an existence close to nature but also acknowledging the feudal cruelty that governs it.
The film won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival (1978)
