The film covers a vast history of 20th century Italy and is an intimate portrait of two friends, both born on 1 January, 1900, one the son of a socialist peasant farmer (Gerard Depardieu) and the other a son of a fascist landowner (Robert De Niro). The two young men pass through the upheavals of modern world, as their personal conflicts become an allegory of the political turmoil of the 20th century Italy. The film is scored by Ennio Morricone and the cinematography is by legendary Vittorio Storaro. Bertolucci’s film is an epic in its scope and power.
