The first screening of the evening belongs to our classics section and presents The Hawks and the Sparrows (1966) by one the great filmmakers in the history of world cinema, the Italian poet, writer and filmmaker, Mr. Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-1975). While wandering the countryside, a pair of father-and-son vagabonds happen upon a talking crow who spouts philosophy and launches them on a freewheeling picaresque through time, space, and the margins of a rapidly modernizing Italy. A comic Marxist fable that balances heady ideas about religion, poverty, and class struggle with irreverent slapstick sight gags, The Hawks and the Sparrows finds Pasolini at his lightest yet as stingingly subversive as ever.
